Specialist skills 3D

Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good, it’s the thing you do that makes you good

malcom gladwell

This project is split into two halves, one wich is to develop a 2D skill and one that is to develop a 3D skill, with the guidance of the word vessel. for this i picked to devlop the 3D skill of brazing and the 2D skill of CAD

Initial responce to context

I first started by looking at what the word vessel meant in all of its different contexts and how it could potentially apply to this project, and the led me to the idea that a vessels are used on journy, and that i want to make a vessel that would transport somone from this life into the next. Given this i wanted to create an urn as i also feel that death is something that should be talked about more, and that this physical vessel that i will make will enable others to process grife and use this vessel to be able to talk more openly about death

Initial concepts

Brazing

brazing is a metal joining process that uses a filler material to join two pieces of metal together without melting the base material to create a strong joint it is used to join two dissimiler metals together and is typically used in the pluming and bike manufacturing industries

To braze you need to heat you part to the bright red stage which for most metals is around 800 - 900 degrees Celsius one this is done you need to heat your brazing rod and place it on the area that you want to braze so that it melts and should run freely

You would want to use brazing when you need the part to not suffer from thermal movement when the dimension of the part you are working on have critical dimensions. It is also used in juray making applications to create seamless joint that are asteheticly appealing

Understand Process and Practice

Types of Brazing

Torch Brazening

This is the most common method, and it typically uses Oxy-acetylene, Oxy-propain or air-acetylene torch to heat the material and the brazing medium

Induction Brazening

Induction brazing uses a high-frequency ac current to create a heat-induced electromagnetic field that then inducts heat into the workpiece its the cleanest and efficient method

Resistance Brazening

Resistance brazing is produced by passing an electrical current through the part, which melts the solder. This creates a very prices joint and is used in commonly used in small electronic production.

Final thoughts

Although my product was unsuccessful, full i feel i have learned a lot through this process i have learnt that it takes time and dedication to become good at something. i have also learned how to braze which is something i feel i have made real improvement on as shown from my work at the start of this module to the work at the end of this module
